What is a Guardian Home Family?

A Guardian Family is a family to whom a breeder gives a puppy or dog.
This puppy is the lifetime pet of the Guardian Family, to care for as they would any

pet of their own.

The guardian family does not have to pay for the purchase of the puppy but will enter
into a legal agreement with the breeder to accept the responsibility and care of the

dog.

A guardian home is a loving forever home for a puppy or dog that a breeder has
carefully selected and wishes to retrain in their breeding program, while allowing that
puppy to live life to the fullest as a much loved pet. If we could have all the puppies
in one home that would be amazing (for me!), but that is not viable and not always
the best interest of the puppies. This way each puppy has a loving home and daily

walks and love and attention.

The benefit of this for the guardian family is they are going to have a puppy that is a
pick of the breeder’s litters, temperament tested, and health tested at 12 months of
age which isn’t usually done for Pet dogs. The guardian homes will maintain regular
communication with the breeder and is to allow the breeding of the dog for a certain
number of litters or until a certain age, as advised by a reproductive vet specialist.
When retired from breeding, the dog is desexed and legal ownership is given to the
Guardian Family. All this will be stipulated in further detail in a contract where a

mutual understanding and agreement will be reached.

The dog is an investment to the breeder’s breeding program and by signing the legal
agreement with the breeder, the Guardian Family agrees that the breeder requires
access to and is legally allowed to use the dog for breeding purposes.

The breeder is responsible for all costs related to the guardian dog including food,
vaccinations, flea and tick treatment, breeding costs and any illness that occurs
which is not a result of the guardian family lack of care. The breeder accepts full cost

of any breeding related expenses that occur.

If the breeder feels that the dog is not able to be cared for by the guardian they will

step in and take the dog back into their care.

The dog is not to be on sold or taken away from the breeder without written consent

from the breeder.

If the Guardian Family chooses to move more than 100km from the existing
residence the breeder must be notified before the intent to move.
At the end of the agreement the dog is to be desexed and full ownership of the dog

is transferred to the Guardian Family.

Guardian Home Dams (Females): Here at M&M Companion Retrievers we breed
our girls on their second or third heat, or whichever is after 18 months of age. We
feel this is most beneficial to the dog as it helps boost the overall build and growth of
females, plus at this age the girls generally bounce back from the whelping well.
Each breeding girl is assessed and checked by our Reproductive Vet Specialist and
local vet. Each dog is treated as though there first litter is their last, we do not take
our girls for granted. The health of our dogs is our number one priority. Mating,
pregnancy, whelping and looking after a litter of puppies is a big job for mum. We
closely monitor her health and how she copes with the entire process. Providing
Mum and puppies are 100 % healthy, with approval from the Reproductive Vet
Specialist, we support back-to-back breeding. This means that when the girl comes
into heat, she will be bred providing everything aligns. We are happy to discuss and
educate further about the dogs breeding cycle and why this is the preferred breeding

method.

Guardian Home Studs (males): The M&M Companion Retriever has prospective
male puppies available in 2024. Health testing will commence at 1 year of age with
the exception on DNA which can be conducted earlier. Providing they pass the breed
specific health testing they can commence mating with a well-matched dam at
around 18 months of age. This entails the Guardian Home to make the male dog
available to the breeder for approximately 1 week when the female dam is in heat.
The stud will remain with the breeder for this time until a successful mating is
conducted. The Stud is then returned to his Guardian Home. The Stud may be used
several times a year. Some notice will be able to be given when the dam’s heat cycle
can be estimated. When the female comes into heat (day 1) the Stud would need to

be available for mating from day 9 to 16 for example.

We are extremely selective about who we bring into our Guardian program and not
everyone makes the cut. We retain the right to refuse applicants for any reason we
deem unsuitable and retain the right to decline disclosing said reasons. We hope
that you will be involved in our program and can get involved with the puppy litters as

little or as much as you like.

Currently we have 5 retrievers available for the guardian home program:

Macey Labrador black

Marshmallow Goldador golden

Maple Golden Retriever golden

Mini  Golden Retriever white

Rory Labrador red fox

Raegen Labrador male red fox
